Felted Purse
Bulky weight 100% wool or 2 strands of
worsted weight
(I’ve used 1 skein of Bulky Lopi and double strands of Brown Sheep)
Number 13 (16 inch) circular needles
Cast on 62 stitches and knit for 27 rows (1 skein) of
color 1 (green)
Change to color 2 (black) and knit 4 more
rows and bind off.
These instructions are for the felted
purse shown here. Be creative and make
your bag any size you like. It will
shrink by about a third.3
Sew bottom seam together and gusset the
bottom creating a 3 1/2 inch base.
With Number 11 double pointed needles
(because that is the size I own), cast on 4 stitches in color 2 (black) and
knit 4, pull the yarn behind, move the stitches to other end of needle and knit
again. This creates a nice tub. Knit this way for 70 rows. Repeat.
Sew these handles on 2 inches apart at either end of the purse.
Cast on 7 stitches in color 2 (black) and
stockinet stitch for 16 rows. Sew this
flap on in the center of one of the top sides.
Now you are ready to felt!
Place the bag into a lingerie bag or a
pillow case and close up the top. Fill
the washing machine with hot water and a few drops of
Keep agitating for 10 to 20 minutes until
the purse is felted to your satisfaction.
Do not let the machine empty and
rinse. I stand over it and keep turning
it back to the beginning of the agitation cycle until I am done!
Make a button out of sculpty
clay or crochet a button with your favorite eyelash yarn.
I covered a piece of cardboard with
batting and fabric and glued it into the base of the purse to give it a strong
foundation. That can make a nice
surprise to who ever opens the bag!!!
